Dehydration can accelerate the aging process. When you are chronically dehydrated, your skin begins to wrinkle and wither prematurely, resulting in a more aged appearance. Think of a tomato that is left to dry out in the sun, or a flower that is left unwatered - or any other living organism, for that matter, that when dehydrated is left to dry and shrivel. The sad truth is that while many people are well-versed in the benefits of taking expensive over-the-counter anti-aging supplements, few pay attention to the simple measure of just ensuring their intake of water is adequate throughout the day. Water truly is the fountain of youth, and the cornerstone of vibrant, healthy skin.

Skin Issues

Your skin is your body's largest organ, and like any other organ, it is made up of cells which need water to function optimally. When properly hydrated, the skin is able to carry out one of its key functions of flushing out excess wastes and toxins. When dehydrated, however, the cells ability to eliminate toxins is compromised, leaving you more susceptible to skin issues like dermatitis and psoriasis. The skin also is left vulnerable to becoming dry, flaky, itchy, and wrinkly, which goes hand-in-hand with the point above about premature aging.

Joint Pain

The articular cartilage between your joints is composed primarily of water; around 70-80% of it, in fact. Joint cartilage serves a lubricating role, and acts as a cushion to reduce friction between adjacent bones. When the body is properly hydrated, the fluid's gel-like consistency is maintained, helping it shock-absorb within the joint capsule. When dehydrated, however, there is less lubrication in the joint, which leads to pain and discomfort. Have you ever experienced aches and pains in your knees, hips, or lower back? Constipation

Dehydration is also a common cause of constipation. When you are dehydrated, your colon is unable to add enough water to your stool to help streamline bowel movement. This results in stool that is hard, dry, dense, and difficult to pass. Being fully hydrated is therefore essential to ensure easy and effortless elimination of wastes.

Most people are dehydrated, and do not drink enough water throughout the day. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. By making the simple adjustment of ensuring you remain properly hydrated throughout that day, your health will improve as will your quality of life. Who wouldn’t want a life free from premature aging, skin problems, joint pain, and constipation? This life can be yours by simply remembering and living our key fundamentals on water:

  • Drink 2 litres, or 6-8 glasses of water, every day.
  • The best water to drink is pure water, or filtered water with no added chemicals like chlorine or fluoride.
  • Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. This is how humans evolved to take in more water. Unfortunately, most people’s diets today have replaced fruits and vegetables with dried foods that do not hydrate them.
  • When you feel hungry, it is often because you are dehydrated. (Thirst hunger is one of our core Human Hungers). Reach for a glass of water first instead, to prevent unnecessary eating.
  • Avoid diuretics such as tea, coffee, and alcohol, which actually deplete us of water instead of adding it.
